The LDS Version of Amazing Grace
The LDS Church recently added “Amazing Grace” to their hymnbook, but they left out over half of the original stanzas! While most Mormon hymns only have 3 or 4 stanzas, the language of the omitted verses seem unfitting for the LDS Church to sing—given Mormonism’s doctrines.
In this video, we explore the theological differences that may have led to these changes, and walk through the lyrics of Amazing Grace, comparing them with traditional Christian interpretations of this iconic hymn.
Mormonism’s teachings are distinctly different from Christianity—and these distinctions are evident when we consider the nature of grace. For grace to truly be amazing, it cannot be on the basis of our performance.
