Are the “Other Sheep not of this fold” in John 10:16 referring to Ancient Americans?

And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. (John 10:16)

Latter-day Saints claim that the “other sheep that are not of this fold” from John 10:16 refer to ancient Americans that Jesus would appear to after His ascension.

But is that what Jesus intended to communicate when He stated that there were “other sheep” that needed to be brought into the flock?

Are the “other sheep” those in the Americas? Or are they referring to a greater truth present all over the New Testament?
