Are Mormons Christians?

The term “Christian” literally means “little Christs,” or “disciples of Christ.” A Christian, then, is someone that believes in and follows the teaching of Jesus in the Bible. In fact, a person cannot be rightly called a Christian without submitting to God’s Word. So are Mormons Christians? The Bible says,
“Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God.” (2 John 1:9)
The LDS Church claims to be a Christian church on the basis of its name and beliefs. But how do the teachings of Mormonism compare with the Word of God?
Verses
  • 2 John 1:9
  • 1 Timothy 2:5
  • Numbers 23:19
  • Isaiah 43:10
  • 1 John 4:9
  • John 8:23
  • John 3:36
  • Matthew 7:21a

“In fact, there is not a single category of doctrine on which Mormons and Christians agree. Anyone can say that he believes in Christ. But just because a person says he is a Christian, that does not mean he truly has saving faith.”

The Bible Teaches…

1. There is one God (1 Timothy 2:5).
2. “God is not a man” (Numbers 23:19).
3. “God says, “before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me” (Isaiah 43:10).
4. “God sent his only Son into the world” (1 John 4:9).
5. “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world” (John 8:23).
6. “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal Life” (John 3:36).

Mormonism Claims…

 1. There are many Gods (Abraham 4; Teachings of the Prophets Joseph Smith p. 370)
2. God is a glorified man (Teachings of the Prophets Joseph Smith p. 345-346)
 3. By performing sacred Mormon rituals, men can become Gods (D&C 131-132; Gospel Principles ch. 47)
4. Satan is God’s son and the spirit brother of Jesus (Moses 4; Gospel Principles ch. 3)
5. All people were born as spirit children to God and one of his wives before the world was made (D&C 93; Gospel Principles ch. 2)
6. Belief in Jesus is not enough to have eternal life (Articles of Faith 3, Gospel Principles ch. 47)
A simple comparison like this displays the clear disparity between Mormonism and true Christianity. In fact, there is not a single category of doctrine on which Mormons and Christians agree. Anyone can say that he believes in Christ. But just because a person says he is a Christian, that does not mean he truly has saving faith. Jesus warns that many people will make a superficial profession of faith, even acknowledging Him as “Lord” but never enter heaven:
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven…” (Matthew 7:21a)
Mormonism is decidedly unChristian.
